“MAHATANDAVA” – The dance of death!!! Tangente, Samstag 18.11.2017
Shiva, the destroyer, Nataraja or the Mahakaal are few of the many names he is known with and greatly admired, worshiped and praised all over the subcontinent.
Since the birth of all Indian dance forms, one of the biggest passions for the dancers is to portray or manifest Shiva’s Tandava.
There are two forms of Tandava dancing, Rudra Tandava and Ananda Tandava. This dance is described as a vigorous dance that is performed by Shiva and is the source of the cycle of creation, preservation and dissolution. While the Rudra Tandava depicts his violent nature, first as the creator and later as the destroyer of the universe, even of death itself; the Ananda Tandava depicts him as enjoying.
Shiva’s Tandava is an allegory on the universality of death: no matter one's station in life, the Dance of Death unites all, very similar to late-medieval European artistic genre known as Danse Macabre.
